Samuel Fredrick Smith
Private 4977796 1/4th Battalion
Hampshire Regiment
Killed in Action 08 Oct 1944 : Aged 32
Assisi War Cemetery - Ref: II, F, 12
Private 4977796 Samuel Fredrick Smith was born 15th July 1912. Parents October 1909 Blackwell registered marriage between coal hewer Mr Samuel Smith and Miss Sarah Agnes Bexon, notes infant mortality claimed their first child. Blackwell 1911 census listed father Samuel 24, with wife Mrs Sarah Agnes Smith 24 mothering 4 month Agnes Mary at Hilcote Lane. Blackwell 18 Aug 1912 baptism of their son Samuel Fredrick confirms he shared same birthplace, before family claimed Huthwaite ties.
Mr Samuel Fredrick Smith is identified by next available 1939 census, an unemployed Railway Carriage Cleaner still living with parents at the once Huthwaite borderline addressing 10 Carnarvon Grove. His married sister had apparently earlier settled in Sutton Road, as related by Mr Gerry Ward offering extended family remembrance for an uncle Sam he'd never know. Sam did marry Miss Martha Annie Greatorex from 82 Main Street in 1942, managing to at least assert a final Huthwaite connection.
Private 4977796 Samuel Fredrick Smith is ultimately acknowledged among swelled numbers of Hampshire Regiment Infantry Brigades. Their 1/4 Battalion places him in Italy, during fierce fighting through that German front line. Pte S F Fredrick was killed in action on 8th October 1944, now correctly aged 32 after wife Mrs Martha Annie Smith afforded his personalised headstone.
