Newcastle Street was entirely constructed by the New Hucknall Colliery Company, as one of their largest housing schemes to help home a vast influx of mining families eagerly seeking Huthwaite employment. Amid the blocks of terraced housing, access was given into New Street, on the corner of which they'd left room for later providing their 1893 opening of a Miners Welfare Institute.
Following closures then fire damage, this privately owned premises saw 1982 demolition, exposing a large plot offered for sale.
Dr Smith afforded room for a New Street Peak Pharmacy, which fuelled some rumours regarding a personal motive aiming to profit by providing full site for a much demanded larger medical centre. His investment eventually became fully realised when selling off cleared land for constructing Newcastle Street town houses. Here follows that development starting from a snowy February 2006.
