The Huthwaite High Street was formed through 1907 construction of a huge Co-operative Wholesale Society hosiery factory almost filling entire length. Address commonly found elsewhere typically refers to a towns main street which primarily sited various shops and banks. Choice of name for this Sutton Road backstreet might have inferred an impressive delivery address for the original CWS warehouse entrance, but it most likely simply described lofty ridge site above a very steep northerly rearward descent.
Likewise dated layouts of an influentially named Unwin Street, plus a North Street, between which High Street gained Sutton Road highway access, favoured the latter, especially after extending 1914 L shaped factory opened a later preferred North Street motorised entrance.
Blocks of basically designed roadside housing then swiftly filled in most spaces along all those entry streets. Room was found however, for a facing and far future predicted 2008 name grandly adding Brierley Forest View, 21 North Street, NG17 2PE.
There's no accountable reason why High Street factory length appeared to lose use throughout corporate buyouts. After Meritina, 2002 fitment of North Street PVC windows suggested where the Quantum brand envisaged forthcoming prosperity.
Looking off Duke Street over North Street junction reveals the row of High Street housing, most of which directly faced the historic factory for over a century. For sale sign warned there'd be dramatic changes. View from opposite end off Unwin Street noted 2015 roadworks relaying water pipes, cynically claimed by some to be in preparation fulfilling proposed plans for replacement housing.
One High Street business maintains a necessary role covering Ashfield Effluent Services, after witnessing controversial clearance.
Lengthy demolition of that vast brick built complex went on beyond 2017. Total ground clearance left bordering wall for site safety, and a fenced off High Street access gap still currently awaits opposed permission to start development of another housing estate.
