HUTHWAITE WEST END F.C.
ANNUAL SUPPER

On Saturday evening the annual gathering of the Huthwaite West End F.C. held at their headquarters, the "Shoulder of Mutton," disclosed a very satisfactory state of affairs, both in respect of the club's sporting records and its financial stability. The supper was given to the members and supporters as a token of appreciation for their interest in the club's doings. Mr. A. Thurman (treasurer) formally welcomed 50 players, friends and supporters, who all enjoyed an excellent meal.
Subsequently Mr. C. Walters (President of the Club) occupied the chair and said he was glad that the club, afer an uphill fight, had finished third in the North Notts. League. With respect to the Industrial Union being represented on the Council, Mr. T. On Saturday the New Hucknall Colliery cricket teams served up very different types of cricket. That of the first teams were highly meritorious, but the second eleven's performance was profoundly disappointing. At Annesley the seniors set up something of a record. The won the match with all their wickets in hand, a first wicket partnership by Slack and F, Dobb producing 115 runs. Slack was run out for 69, after hitting twelve fours ; his colleague scored 14, which included six fours. Bowling was also praiseworthy, Freestone captured five for 37, and Grice three for 18. HUTHWAITE

Mr. T. Pratt was the M.C. at the weekly whist drive on Saturday evening at the Social Service Centre. There was a good attendance and a satisfactory profit. The first and second prizes were shared by Mrs. Nicholls and Mr. Bradley; Mrs. Shelton and Mr. Bentley were the other two winners.

The victims of the street accident last week are making slow progress and are not yet able to get up. Mr. Norman Evans has not yet been allowed to receive visitors, but his condition is favourable, and he is in good spirits. The age of Miss Fisher was given as 15 last week, as a matter of fact she is several years older. She lost a good deal of blood and sustained facial injuries, in addition to severe shock, but a slight improvement is being maintained.

On Monday morning a serious misfortune befell two Huthwaite brother, Messrs. William and Harry Wright, who had been living in a caravan in Phillip's Croft, off Blackwell Road. While they were both absent on Monday morning the caravan roof was seen to be on fire by Mr. G.H. Wood. A boy named Fred Phillips and Mrs. Bradder spread the alarm, and Mrs. Berry commenced throwing water on the flames, in which she was soon assisted by Mrs. Emma Hill and Mrs. Wilkinson. As a matter of fact, women in the locality displayed remarkable readiness and resourcefulness in dealing with the outbreak. Very soon there was plenty help but there was no chance of saving the van, even if there had been an adequate water supply. Mrs. Hill smashed a window with the intention of dragging some of the movables through, but the caravan was rapidly becoming a furnace, and there was no possibility of saving anything. Moreover Mrs. Hill took a risk, for the flames rushed through aperture she made and the roof, falling in, set fire to the lower part, and the whole burnt fiercely until only the frame was left. A band of helpers, led by Mr. Barlow attached ropes to the van, drew it farther into the field to prevent damage to the hedge. The police arrived, but the van was burnt out in little over half-an-hour. It was the property of Mr. S. Phillips, and was not insured, but the furniture, books, etc., belonged to the Wright's, who lost all their personal possessions, and clothes except what they stood up in, and they took greatly to heart the loss of a cage and two canaries. How the fire started is a mystery.

The annual dinner of the Huthwaite Villa F.C. was held on Saturday at the "White Swan," Huthwaite, host and hostess Cook catering for about 28 guests. The club have won the Sutton and Skegby knock-out cup, were runners-up in the Notts. Combination (first section) and finalists in the Huthwaite Charity Cup. Medals in connection with the last-named competition had been presented, and on Saturday the players received further sets of miniature cups and medals from Messrs. J.R. Wright and J. Gelsthorpe.
A regrettable feature was the absence of one of the players (Gascoigne), who has been ill for some weeks, ...

Successful Season.

Mr. Wright congratulated the club on the season's successes, and wished them success in the future.
Next year the Villa will be absent from the Sutton nd Skegby League (or the Border League), having decided to run one team only in the Notts. Combination, Division I. Whatever their prowess on the field, the Villa players displayed unexpected reserve at the dinner in the matter of musical talents, and contented themselves with community songs.
At the annual meeting the following elections were made:- President, Councillor E.H. Lowe; chairman, M.G. Oridge; vice-presidents, Messrs. J.R. Wright, J. Gelsthorpe, G. Dalton, J. Slack, G. Mr. Norman Evans, Huthwaite Road, the organist of the Sherwood Street Church, turned off the side walk to cross the road, and was involved in a collision with a girl cyclist, Doris Fisher, 5, Blackwell Road.
Both were thrown with some force to the ground, the girl, who is 15 years of age, apparently falling on her head. Her forehead was badly cut, and her face severely bruised besides a certain amount of shock. Help was forthcoming, and she was taken home. Mr Evans sustained cuts on the back of the head and the forearm, also slight concussion. He was assisted to his brother's home (Mr. Arthur Evans) where he rested for a time. Both sufferers were attended by Dr. Gaston, but there were no very serious injuries, and they are recovering at home.
