Huthwaite Online WW1 Remembrance

Private 23045 Charles Edward Holmes was born Q1 1891 in Westwood. Parents Q4 1888 marriage between Mr Edwin Holmes from Nottingham and Miss Emily Clarke from Westwood began a family in Selson. Their 1895 relocation to Hucknall-under-Huthwaite can only list 1901 Sutton Road household headed by a self employed Mr Edwin Holmes 33. Mrs Emily Holmes 33, is mother to George Frederick 12, Charles Edward 10, Annie 6, Harold 5, Galdys E and Edith 1. General servant was Lilley Wright 17 from Stonebroom. Next 1911 census unfortunately offers little clue to help identify employed growth of any family members.

Mr Charles Edward Holmes is however, recognised keeping a Huthwaite home through Q1 1913 Mansfield registered marriage with Miss Minnie Hill from 6 Mill Cottage, Huthwaite. Eventual war pension ledger also named two children Mary and Andrew.

Private 23045 C E Holmes enlisted at Sutton joining the 9th Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action among the Flanders Western Front 26th September 1916. Unrecorded age can now be calculated at 25.

Huthwaite Cemetery cenotaph honoured C E Holmes to now add memorial remembrance identifying younger brother H Holmes.
